Act to Change: STEM-based School Competition for Social Good

Institute of Design Knowledge (IDK) continued to support the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS) for its 4th year running of the Community-Based Social Innovation for Youth (CSY) inter-school competition. With the theme “The 4th Social Innovation Community 4.0 Competition”, student teams from over 30 local schools must identify concrete community problems in Sham Shui Po and produce viable prototypes.

For this STEM-based competition, HKCSS arranged community visits for students to interact with different social groups in Sham Shui Po and understand their potential needs, supported with thematic trainings on social research methods, entrepreneurship, and design thinking to enlighten students about social innovation ideas. Topics of focus included public space for youths and children, mental health of senior citizens, and inclusive mobility for the disabled.

As the knowledge partner of the programme, in December IDK delivered a the design thinking training to inform and inspire how creativity and good design can lead to meaningful social innovations that bring positive impact to citizens, right from the capabilities of Hong Kong’s young leaders-to-be. Through the programme, it is hoped that youngsters can equip the ability to understand community characteristics, and broaden the horizon to develop their problem-solving skills with better sense of responsibility.
